“We affirm that the primary and fullest expression of counseling ministry occurs in local church communities where pastors effectively shepherd souls while equipping and overseeing diverse forms of every-member ministry.” – David Powlison
Did you know that soul-care has always been part of the function of the church? God has provided wisdom for life and help and hope through His Word. He designed ministry to take place within the Body of Christ, for the body to care for one another (1 Cor. 12:25), not in a secular counseling environment. Although the Mental Health field provides some forms of help, it cannot accomplish God’s will in conforming Believers to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29). Counseling is a spiritual exercise intended to change the heart of an individual. God works through counseling to accomplish this end.
We equip Believers for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:12). That includes the counseling ministry. God’s Word is sufficient to meet the needs of His people. Outside of medical health situations, Scripture addresses the issues of life that we all face.
